Message from president
Wollo University, which is located 400 kms., from Addis Ababa, the capital and 420 from Bahirdar, via Woldia is one of the recently founded universities in 2005. The University has already celebrated the first batch of 450 teacher education graduates in science and social science disciplines on July 2009. Cognizant of the need to bring about institutional transformation (BPR), the University has restructured its academic and support service units. Accordingly, it has started offering undergraduate courses in seven colleges/institutes constituting 22 departments in two campuses: Dessie and Komblocha. The strategic direction is to make the university allowing its constituents (students and staff at large) the room for free play of diverse values and scientific perspectives. It will also furnish a favorable setting to ensure that students receive high quality education. Precisely, the University is earnestly engaged in a mission to extend the nation’s capacity in higher education.
As it stands, the University is yet to have all its teaching and research units to be furnished with the required state-of-the-art laboratories, workshops, libraries, seminar rooms, etc. in the diverse fields already operating. This calls for the Government, donor community, and individuals concerned to extend their help in raising the University to one capable of producing qualified, competent and professional graduates in the technical sciences and humanities fields. Wollo University is committed to exploit its favorable climate, cultural and historical heritage to contribute to agricultural productivity, tourism and efficient public services at least to Amhara region where it is situated.
Through research and collaborations with national and international partnerships, the university has to work diligently to create the rare opportunities of achieving “center of excellence” in areas and competencies which can emerge through relentless efforts as others in Africa or the northern hemisphere have become recognized. Here, I would like to call upon internal staff and all collaborators to visit our website http://www.wu.edu.et. to provide us constructive and insightful comments for further growth in our efforts for academic excellence and formidable research endeavors.
The future is bright! Thank you.
