Stakeholders workshop on Communities’ adaptive capacity climate change held in Wollo University
Two days stakeholders’ workshop on enhancing communities’ adaptive capacity to climate change induced water scarcity in Kabe watershed, south wollo zone held in Wollo University on November 24, 2011
Dr. Zenebe Baraki in his opening speech said that besides teaching and community service research is also one component of our university’s activity. So, we give also emphasis to conduct researches to find out solutions to our communities problem. He also expressed that Kabe is part of Nile Basin watershed and ILRI funded this project to undertake researches related to watershed to increase productivity of livestock and crops.
Different papers were presented in this stakeholders workshop on different issues that are related to watershed and climate change. Among them enabling communities to regenerate mountain landscapes in African highlands, climate change adaptation in northern Ethiopia. etc
To minimize climate change and enhance productivity there must be reduction on vulnerability livestock and capitalize intensification of smallholders mixed crop livestock systems. In addition using local people indigenous knowledge plays a pivotal role to manage their resources sustainability though there are constraints on communities’ adaptive capacity to climate change.
Currently in northern Ethiopia droughts and water stress affects both livestock and crops production, but still people need for rainfall to support their livelihoods.
Local, regional, legal environment policy that are available for enabling communities adaptive to climate change; organizing community and create corrective actions to climate change, and types of agricultural technologies and practices that are available to climate change adaptation were also discussed in groups and presented to the workshop participants
In two days workshop Wollo University staffs and presidents, ILRI researchers, NGO workers, research centers workers, bureau of agriculture and environment protection workers participated and the workshop also will continue till November 25, 2011.
ToT Given on Research Proposal Development
A training of trainers (ToT) on the development of fundable research proposal has been offered to 40 Wollo University staff by Professor Birhanu Gebremedhin, a scientist from International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI)
The training, that was given from 25 -27 February, 2011, has incorporated deans, research coordinators and one representatives from each department is described to have filled ‘’knowledge and skill gaps’’ the staff had on research proposal development.
Professor Birhanu’s explanations of conceptual underpinnings on fundable research proposal development were crystallised by practical group works and presentations.
The trainees have thanked the University for organising such an invaluable training workshop and hoped to have similar trainings on scientific writing and statistical packages for data analysis.
Dr.Yitbarek W/Hawariat, Vice President for Research and Community service, noted on his closing remarks that college deans and research coordinators have to work out together to deliver this same training to the rest of the University staff.
Professor Birhanu on his part indicated that he would like to see the knowledge and skills gained from the training ‘converted into money’.
Wollo university due to establish legal aid centres in Dessie and kombolcha towns
On 7/5/2003 E.C workshop was held with governmental and non governmental organization and judicial persons in Wollo University to establish legal aid centres in kombolech and Dessie.
The centres will be established with the financial support gained from the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission. Ato Geleta Assefa,an instructor in the department of law in Wollo University, said that the centres will provide services like legal consultation ,assisting in preparation of pleading and other intermediary applications, running litigation through representation in judicial and quasi judicial organs and providing community legal education.
The legal aid centre will also offer free services for vulnerable groups of the society such as people with disabilities, children, women, elders and people living with HIV/AIDS. Besides it will hep students of law to practice what they learn theoretically in the class room.
Participants discussed on key issues like: what will be the role of other stake holders besides the human rights commission? Where should be the office of the centres be? And How to get licence in near future to run litigation in judicial organs.
Participants remarked that since the problems on vulnerable groups is vast; the legal aid centres will help to narrow the problem to some extent. Stakeholders were requested to put their maximum support to help the centres on financial and material aspects to sustain the service given by the centres.
Agreement Reached between Wollo University and South Wollo culture and Tourism Department
Memorandum of understanding has been signed between Wollo University and south Wollo culture and tourism department on December 23/2003E.C.
Ato Alebachew yesuf chief administrator of south Wollo zone, Dr zanaba Baraki, President of Wollo University, vice presidents, deans, directors and religious leaders were among the invited gusts and participants.. The agreement aimed of exploiting the natural and historical heritage and there by contributing towards the socio-economic development of south Wollo zone.
According to zeneba Baraki, President of Wollo University, Wollo University is working hard and developing new curriculum to open departments like culture studies, music and theatrical art departments.’“ So this agreement is a fertile ground for our effort.” he added.

On his speech Ato Kedir Mohammed Culture and tourism department head appreciated the the efforts being made by the university and remarked that every one on each sector should play his/her role to make Dessie and it’s surrounding a tourists attractive site.
Ato alebachew also assured that south Wollo administration will stand on the side of this agreement and put maximum support for the development of the tourism industry.
Participants remarked that since Wollo is home for different beliefs, culture, heritage and music, it needs the active involvement of all to change these important values for tourism development.
The memorandum of understanding entered in to force on the day this agreement is endorsed by the signature of the authorized representatives of the two parties.
Farmers day celebrated in Wollo University
Farmers’ day celebrated colourfully in Wollo University with the presence of farmers, civil servants, religious leaders and staffs from the university and others in Dessie campus on December 27/2003.
While making the opening speech, Dr Ytbarek W/hawariyat, research and community service vice president, said the university is working hard on providing community services besides its educational and research activates. «This festivity is one part of the community service,» he added.
Different cereal crops and fruits planted in the university were visited by the participants.
Meanwhile, a vet clinic which started its work officially on the same day, was one part of the visit. Dr. Abreha G/Egziabeher said that the clinic will work on vaccination and treatment of the surrounding cattle.
The program was concluded with a panel discussion with the participants on how to work jointly with the university and what will be expected from the university and the stake holders.
Participants have appreciated the celebration of Farmers’ day in Wollo University and advised that the university has to keep on doing other research activities that would improve the life of the surrounding community.
Workshop Held on KIOT’s 5 Years strategic plan
A one day Workshop was held on 5 years strategic plan of kombolcha Institute of Technology (KIoT) with stakeholders on December 8,
The workshop started after Dr Zenebe Baraki, President of Wollo University, officially welcomed participants.
The 5 years strategic plan of KIOT was presented by Ato Andualem Ali, Secretary of 5 years strategic plan committee and KIOT staff, and his colleague Ato Tefera Eneyew, member of Strategic plan committee.
Presenters explained about KIOT’s contribution to the national growth and transformation plan, KIOT’s governance model
and organizational structure, Goals of 5 years strategic plan with its implementing mechanisms and indicators.
The presentation was followed by entertaining suggestions and feedback on the strategic plan of KIOT. Participants commented on issues they think the plan doesn’t cover.
Engineering capacity Building team leader Ms. Bianch and Ato Bruk Amha, ECBP QIS (quality Internship) member also briefed on QIS for students, Mentors, KIOT staff and stakeholders.
The workshop was concluded with the presentation of the three groups which focused on the issue of: Reform of Governance on KIOS, Reform of Technology Transfer and university industry linkage.
Wollo University takes initiative to develop ICT resources and Wireless Network Infrastructure
Wollo University has the willingness to take advantage of ICT resources and it has decided to implement an ICT Center for the Wollo University community, and deploy wireless network. This ICT Center will take care of all the issues regarding not only the Internet Access, but also the communication infrastructure and the access to ICT resources both in Dessie and Kombolcha Campuses.
For that purpose a team was engaged, originally formed by two ICT teachers (Tsegaye Misikir and Molla Tesfaye), one ICT technician (Biruk Assefa), one Spanish student from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (Jesús Berdún, who is doing his Master-Thesis Project about ICT in Wollo University), and all under the supervision of the Research Vice-President (Dr. Yitbarek W/Hawariat). Later, this team was joined by another ICT technician (Alula Bahru) and the recently appointed ICT Director (Alemu Jorgi).

Language laboratory of wollo University is said ready to function
The language laboratory equipment, which was provided by the Ministry of Education to WU, has been successfully installed by experts from Bridge Tech PLC on 6 October, 2010.
The laboratory which can accommodate 48 students at a time is believed to minimize the deep-rooted language deficiency of University students.
According to Ato Dereje Mekonen, head of the department of language studies,
the language laboratory will create a better opportunity for students to practise more on language skills and thereby enhance their proficiency.
Bridge Tech Plc. experts have oriented about the operation and proper utilization of the laboratory to language instructors and IT professionals of the University.
It was remarked that a similar thorough orientation should be given to students/users so that they can use the equipment properly.

Institute of Technology starts practical teaching
Institute of Technology (IoT) has started practical teaching using surveying instruments offered from the Ministry of Education.
Ato Yitay Birhanu, head of civil engineering department said the provision of the instruments has kept Wollo University away from moving technology students to other universities for practice.
The head added, ‘‘Apart from the opportunity our students get to practise here, the surveying tools are set to generate income for the university when they are used for the Kombolcha campus road construction purposes. ’’
