Foundation Stone has been laid for Wollo Referral Teaching Hospital

The foundation stone ceremony has been held at ‘Tita’ with a multi-colored ceremony on November 25, 2011.

Minister of education Ato Demeke Mekonnen and Doctor Shek Ali Alamudi laid the foundation stone of Wollo Referral Teaching Hospital.

During the foundation stone solemnize Amhara’s Regional State President Ato Ayalew Gobeze, Ato Bereket Simeon and other higher government officials, Regional officials, Wollo university presidents, South Wollo administration officials, Dessei hospital workers, Wollo university college of Medical & Health Science students, Religious leaders, surrounding communities and invited guests attended the vibrant ceremony.

The referral teaching hospital inculcates a number of wards, students’ dormitory and classes, instructors’ apartments, and other recreational centers including stadiums and gyms. The referral teaching hospital will be constructed under the auspices of Wollo University, Public and Zone health bureau, in addition to donors and volunteers.

In the similar story the foundation stone of Wollo Cultural Center has been also laid at ‘Wollo Bahil Amba’.

On November 26, 2011 Wollo Cultural Center foundation stone ceremony has been celebrated flamboyantly.

Minister of Education Ato Demeke Mekonnen and Amhara Regional State President Ato Ayalew Gobeze laid the foundation stone of Wollo Cultural Centre.

The cultural center will inculcate all Wollo’s traditions, arts and other rituals, and it will be used as a resource center for researchers in different disciplines.

Higher officials, university presidents, religious persons and other invited guests attended the vibrant ceremony taken place at ‘Wollo Bahil Amba’.

Wollo University Officially Launched Extension Program at Kemissie

Wollo University, in addition to Dessie and Woldiya, publicly commenced the 3rd branch at kemissie in extension program on November 20, 2011.

On the occasion the university academic vice president Dr. Assefa Asmare expressed that besides the regular program the university is giving trainings on distance and continuing education for the surrounding community

He also stated that Nursing and Management departments commenced at Kemissie at this moment, but our university will launch other new departments when the need arises by the surrounding community as the university is going to offer services for those who didn’t get the chance to study in their home.

Education bureau head Mr. Abera Tadesse in his part explained universities have been played a pivotal role in producing skilled man power in different disciplines across the nation. Our community who are living in Kemissie and surrounding will be benefited by this golden opportunity, and our Zone will be on the side of the university in any aspects.

Students who attended the inauguration ceremony also expressed their joy; they said that we are very delighted getting this golden chance in our home town Kemissie.

Finally, university president Dr. Zenebe Baraki said that we will work hard to fulfill our government’s mission on giving education chances for all citizens.

Cultural Festival Held in Wollo University

Wollo University under the auspices of South Wollo Cultural and Tourism Bureau held a colorful Cultural Music and Traditional Dance Festival from April 27- 30, 2003 E.C. The festival is intended to bring the renaissance of Wollo’s arts which was Famous in the nation for a long time. It is believed that the region contributes a pivotal role for the development of arts in the nation in general and in the region in particular. But now it is not showing progress as it is expected. In addition to cultural festival, exhibition and research papers were presented by Associate Professor Zerihun Asfaw on focusing ‘the focus of cultural studies in wollo’s culture and arts’. In addition, Ato Yohannes Mengisu, who is lecturer at Yared School, presented his paper on ‘the history of music in Wollo and its movement in the last decades’. Wollo University covered all the expenses of the cultural festival.

12 teams from the South Wollo, North Wollo, and two special woredas( i.e. Kalu, Tewledre, Gubalafto, Raya Kobo, Lasta Lalibella, Borena, Ambassel, Kemisie, Argoba, Waghimra, former Lalibela members, and Wollo University cultural center members) presented their traditional music, dances and wearing styles on three stages i.e. Wollo Cultural Center, Wollo University Dessie Campus, and Kombolcha Biraro Hall. Generally, it is learned that the festival could help the region to boom its culture and arts, and to encourage young artists who are favoring the arts.

Dessie aged more than a hundred and ten years old, is a multi-ethnic city in north-central Ethiopia. Located on the Addis Ababa-Mekele road in South Wollo administrative Zone of the Amhara Region, this city has a latitude and longitude of 11’ 8°N 39’38°E with an elevation between 2470 and 2550 meters above sea level. According to CSA, Dessie in 2005 occupied an estimated area of 15.08 square kilometers, which gave the city a density of 11,213.79 people per square kilometer. The majority of its inhabitants belong to the two principal religions: Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity and Islam.
The Dessie area, called partly as Lakomelza, is one of the earliest inhabited regions in Wollo, previously known as Bête Amhara. Moreover, Wasal, first mentioned in an early 16th century Italian itinerary and now probably lost in the debris of time, was said to be the precursor of Dessie.More...

Wollo University has won 1500 U.S. dollars from U.S. Embassy seed grant completion in collaboration with Langston University

Wollo University has won 1500 U.S. dollars from U.S. Embassy seed grant completion in collaboration with Langston University for ‘’Development of a Center for Small Ruminant Artificial Insemination’’. U.S. Ambassador Donald E. Booth noted: "Ethiopias visionary expansion of tertiary education throughout the country opens up many educational opportunities. The U.S. Embassy is delighted to provide initial funding to support new and innovative collaborations and partnerships between higher education institutions in Ethiopia and in the U.S." The seed money competition was first announced at the December 2011 conference on "Building Sustainable U.S.-Ethiopian University Partnerships," sponsored by the U.S. Embassy and the Institute of International Education, with support from the Ministry of Education. The objectives of the grant competition were to

  • grow mutually beneficial and sustainable partnerships between U.S. and Ethiopian universities and colleges,
  • introduce new higher education institutions to U.S. and Ethiopian partnerships, and
  • strengthen the skills and experience of faculty and administrators in both countries in developing and implementing partnerships.

ToT Given on Research Proposal Development

A training of trainers (ToT) on the development of fundable research proposal has been offered to 40 Wollo University staff by Professor Birhanu Gebremedhin, a scientist from International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) The training, that was given from 25 -27 February, 2011, has incorporated deans, research coordinators and one representatives from each department is described to have filled ‘’knowledge and skill gaps’’ the staff had on research proposal development. Professor Birhanu’s explanations of conceptual underpinnings on fundable research proposal development were crystallised by practical group works and presentations.

The trainees have thanked the University for organising such an invaluable training workshop and hoped to have similar trainings on scientific writing and statistical packages for data analysis. Dr.Yitbarek W/Hawariat, Vice President for Research and Community service, noted on his closing remarks that college deans and research coordinators have to work out together to deliver this same training to the rest of the University staff. Professor Birhanu on his part indicated that he would like to see the knowledge and skills gained from the training ‘converted into money’.

Wollo university due to establish legal aid centres in Dessie and kombolcha towns

On 7/5/2003 E.C workshop was held with governmental and non governmental organization and judicial persons in Wollo University to establish legal aid centres in kombolech and Dessie. The centres will be established with the financial support gained from the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission. Ato Geleta Assefa,an instructor in the department of law in Wollo University, said that the centres will provide services like legal consultation ,assisting in preparation of pleading and other intermediary applications, running litigation through representation in judicial and quasi judicial organs and providing community legal education.

The legal aid centre will also offer free services for vulnerable groups of the society such as people with disabilities, children, women, elders and people living with HIV/AIDS. Besides it will hep students of law to practice what they learn theoretically in the class room. Participants discussed on key issues like: what will be the role of other stake holders besides the human rights commission? Where should be the office of the centres be? And How to get licence in near future to run litigation in judicial organs. Participants remarked that since the problems on vulnerable groups is vast; the legal aid centres will help to narrow the problem to some extent. Stakeholders were requested to put their maximum support to help the centres on financial and material aspects to sustain the service given by the centres.

Agreement Reached between Wollo University and South Wollo culture and Tourism Department

Memorandum of understanding has been signed between Wollo University and south Wollo culture and tourism department on December 23/2003E.C. Ato Alebachew yesuf chief administrator of south Wollo zone, Dr zanaba Baraki, President of Wollo University, vice presidents, deans, directors and religious leaders were among the invited gusts and participants.. The agreement aimed of exploiting the natural and historical heritage and there by contributing towards the socio-economic development of south Wollo zone. According to zeneba Baraki, President of Wollo University, Wollo University is working hard and developing new curriculum to open departments like culture studies, music and theatrical art departments.’“ So this agreement is a fertile ground for our effort.” he added.

On his speech Ato Kedir Mohammed Culture and tourism department head appreciated the the efforts being made by the university and remarked that every one on each sector should play his/her role to make Dessie and it’s surrounding a tourists attractive site. Ato alebachew also assured that south Wollo administration will stand on the side of this agreement and put maximum support for the development of the tourism industry. Participants remarked that since Wollo is home for different beliefs, culture, heritage and music, it needs the active involvement of all to change these important values for tourism development. The memorandum of understanding entered in to force on the day this agreement is endorsed by the signature of the authorized representatives of the two parties.

Farmers day celebrated in Wollo University

Farmers’ day celebrated colourfully in Wollo University with the presence of farmers, civil servants, religious leaders and staffs from the university and others in Dessie campus on December 27/2003. farmer While making the opening speech, Dr Ytbarek W/hawariyat, research and community service vice president, said the university is working hard on providing community services besides its educational and research activates. «This festivity is one part of the community service,» he added. Different cereal crops and fruits planted in the university were visited by the participants. Meanwhile, a vet clinic which started its work officially on the same day, was one part of the visit. Dr. Abreha G/Egziabeher said that the clinic will work on vaccination and treatment of the surrounding cattle.

Participants have appreciated the celebration of Farmers’ day in Wollo University and advised that the university has to keep on doing other research activities that would improve the life of the surrounding community.





Workshop Held on KIOT’s 5 Years strategic plan

A one day Workshop was held on 5 years strategic plan of kombolcha Institute of Technology (KIoT) with stakeholders on December 8, The workshop started after Dr Zenebe Baraki, President of Wollo University, officially welcomed participants. Dr Zenebe Baraki,officially welcomed participants

The 5 years strategic plan of KIOT was presented by Ato Andualem Ali, Secretary of 5 years strategic plan committee and KIOT staff, and his colleague Ato Tefera Eneyew, member of Strategic plan committee. Presenters explained about KIOT’s contribution to the national growth and transformation plan, KIOT’s governance model and organizational structure, Goals of 5 years strategic plan with its implementing mechanisms and indicators. The presentation was followed by entertaining suggestions and feedback on the strategic plan of KIOT. Participants commented on issues they think the plan doesn’t cover.

The workshop was concluded with the presentation of the three groups which focused on the issue of: Reform of Governance on KIOS, Reform of Technology Transfer and university industry linkage.

Wollo University takes initiative to develop ICT resources and Wireless Network Infrastructure

Wollo University has the willingness to take advantage of ICT resources and it has decided to implement an ICT Center for the Wollo University community, and deploy wireless network. This ICT Center will take care of all the issues regarding not only the Internet Access, but also the communication infrastructure and the access to ICT resources both in Dessie and Kombolcha Campuses. For that purpose a team was engaged, originally formed by two ICT teachers (Tsegaye Misikir and Molla Tesfaye), one ICT technician (Biruk Assefa), one Spanish student from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (Jesús Berdún, who is doing his Master-Thesis Project about ICT in Wollo University), and all under the supervision of the Research Vice-President (Dr. Yitbarek W/Hawariat). Language laboratory of wollo University is said ready to function

The language laboratory equipment, which was provided by the Ministry of Education to WU, has been successfully installed by experts from Bridge Tech PLC on 6 October, 2010. The laboratory which can accommodate 48 students at a time is believed to minimize the deep-rooted language deficiency of University students.

According to Ato Dereje Mekonen, head of the department of language studies, the language laboratory will create a better opportunity for students to practise more on language skills and thereby enhance their proficiency. Bridge Tech Plc. experts have oriented about the operation and proper utilization of the laboratory to language instructors and IT professionals of the University. It was remarked that a similar thorough orientation should be given to students/users so that they can use the equipment properly.

Institute of Technology starts practical teaching
Institute of Technology (IoT) has started practical teaching using surveying instruments offered from the Ministry of Education.

Ato Yitay Birhanu, head of civil engineering department said the provision of the instruments has kept Wollo University away from moving technology students to other universities for practice. The head added, ‘‘Apart from the opportunity our students get to practise here, the surveying tools are set to generate income for the university when they are used for the Kombolcha campus road construction purposes. ’’
